MEET THE DOCTOR
JOSEPH RITOLA, DC
ATLAS CHIROPRACTOR

Dr. Joseph Ritola was born and raised in Traverse City, Michigan. His first experience with chiropractic care was as a patient when a chiropractor helped him recover from a significant lower back injury sustained playing football in high school. He was so impressed with the results, he knew he wanted to pursue a career in the healing arts.

Starting With Structure: The First Pillar

Right out of high school he completed training to become a licensed massage therapist. His early training taught him to focus on the body’s structure – the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and fascia that support the body’s frame.

Years later, when Dr. Ritola became a chiropractor, he carried that same structural mindset into his new profession. While many patients improved with chiropractic adjustments alone, others didn’t get the results Dr. Ritola expected.

He returned to his massage therapy roots and integrated advanced soft-tissue
techniques along with the chiropractic care. The improved results were immediate and
dramatic.

Yet even then, for certain patients, the results were short-lived. That’s when he realized something important: these patients also required additional training in strength and stability.

This realization led him to dig deeper and advance his skills in physical rehabilitation, helping patients build long-term stability through targeted exercises and stretches. Many chronic and recurring problems finally began to resolve.

Still, there was another piece missing.

The Nervous System: The Second Pillar

Several years into practice, Dr. Ritola’s old football injuries resurfaced—and though he was utilizing conventional chiropractic care, physiotherapy, massage, and rehab strengthening (all the tools he had relied on for years to care for his own patients), none were helping him heal his own injuries. In fact, his symptoms were getting worse.

It wasn’t until he became a patient of an Atlas (Upper Cervical) Chiropractor that everything changed.

Atlas Chiropractors focus on correcting nervous system dysfunction, not just the structure. They correct misalignments at the very top of the spine where the brainstem is located, restoring communication between the brain and the body.

For Dr. Ritola, the results were life-changing. His decades-old injuries finally began to resolve—not because the muscles were treated, but because the nervous system was corrected at its source.

He was so impressed with his results that he quit his current role to train in this specialized technique, determined to bring it to his own patients. Once again, the outcomes in his office improved dramatically and he was able to help a wider variety of patients.

Now he could effectively address both the neurological and structural pillars of health.

The Final Missing Piece: Metabolic Health

But even with these two pillars working together, there were patients who continued to struggle.

They were getting adjusted. They were receiving manual soft-tissue work. They were doing their rehab. Their muscles and joints were balanced and their nervous system was connected. But their bodies still weren’t healing the way they should.

That’s when the third pillar became impossible to ignore.

As someone who had long prioritized his own metabolic health by eating whole foods, avoiding inflammatory and processed foods, and limiting sugar intake, Dr. Ritola understood how profoundly metabolism affects inflammation, pain, recovery, and general wellbeing.
He also saw firsthand how rapidly metabolic health in America has declined, especially over the past decade of treating patients.

For many patients, an unhealthy metabolic system was the invisible barrier preventing true, lasting health and healing.

Dr. Ritola knew that integrating this last pillar of health into his practice would be the most challenging yet, but he worked hard to find ways to incorporate simple, practical, and accessible ways to make metabolic change realistic and achievable for the average patient.

The Three Pillars Come Together

Through this journey—from structure, to rehabilitation, to neurology, to metabolism – Dr. Ritola discovered a simple truth:

You cannot achieve lasting physical health unless all three pillars—Structural, Neurological, and Metabolic—are functioning together.

Today, Dr. Ritola evaluates each patient across all three systems, identifies where breakdowns are occurring, and creates personalized plans that help restore balance and function to the body as a whole. He does not make healthcare decisions for his patients, but rather with them to help them meet their desired goals.

Because your body, like a car, can only perform its best when:
-
the frame is aligned,
-
the engine is tuned, and
-
the fuel system provides clean, healing energy.

This is the foundation of truly holistic, effective heath care—and it’s the foundation that Atlas Chiropractic & Wellness is built on.
